Body found in Fairmont, police suspect hit-and-run

FAIRMONT — Police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found beside a road on Wednesday as a hit-and-run, but they have a couple of questions, including who the woman is and if she did die from being hit by a car.

Police Chief Jon Edwards said a passerby found the body, which was just off the 800 block of Cottage Road, about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. He described the body as being in tall weeds about 10 feet from the road.

He said the closest home is about a half mile away.

He said police are working the case as a hit-and-run, but are also waiting to see what the state Medical Examiner’s Office determines is the cause of death.

He said the body had been there a “couple of days” before it was found, and had begun decomposing.

“We did collect some evidence from the scene,” Edwards said.

He said the woman appeared to be black and gave no further description.

Anyone with information is asked to call Edwards or Detective David Thompson at 910-628-9766.
